Each club ends up with one entry
Runs all year · Cutoff 31 JanuaryEvery club’s par 3s are listed on its profile, drawn in the house style. Anyone can vote for the best one: members, visitors, or a golfer who has never played there. Not members-only. The hole with the most votes becomes that club’s entry, the only hole from that club that goes forward.
Club size cannot buy an entry. Voting never crosses club boundaries, so a 900-member club has no advantage over a 300-member one. Each club is only ever competing with itself.
Voting runs continuously, all year. The cutoff is 31 January, and whoever leads at that point is the entry. Every vote is stamped to an edition, so you vote again next year and last year’s winner starts level.
Clubs don’t have to do anything. Voting runs whether or not a club takes part. When a club claims its book it can add photography, its professional’s notes and its own story, and the pages are marked verified by the club. That is the only difference: claiming improves a club’s pages, never its chances.
The result stays sealed until the vote closes.
Find your clubThe entries compete
The published weightingAll the club entries go into a comparison. Golfers see two holes side by side and pick one. You do not need to have played either. Before you start, you tell us which courses you have played, and the system serves you pairs you know first, because a pick from someone who has stood on both tees is worth more than a pick from a photograph.
A hole’s score is its win rate: how often it gets picked when shown. That way a hole seen 500 times is not beaten by one seen 5,000 times.
Picks on holes you have not played still count, just for less. Anyone can play, as many as they like. Rate-limited and monitored for gaming.
Pairs where you have stood on both tees. It is the difference between judging a hole from a photograph and judging it from your scorecard, so these picks carry the greater share.
The best entries in each length band go through to the pool, not simply the best overall. A course needs a wedge and a wood, so the bands are judged separately and published with the scores.
A panel builds the course
Not the top eighteenThis is what makes Par 54 a course and not a list. The panel does not take the top eighteen. It builds a course from the pool: a full spread of yardages, different styles, no two neighbouring holes that play the same way. The eighteen that make it are the ones that fit together, and the reasoning is published for every hole.
Then the eighteen are numbered one to eighteen for narrative rhythm, the way an architect routes a real course.
A great hole can miss out because the course already has three like it. That is a routing decision, not a verdict on the hole, and it goes straight back into contention next year.
A club does not have to take part for its hole to be considered. Unclaimed profiles still collect votes. The club only gets involved if its hole makes the final eighteen, at which point it gets the call-up.
If a hole from an unclaimed profile makes the eighteen, the club gets the call: accept the standard featured terms and take its place. If a club declines, the next hole in the pool that fits the routing steps up, exactly like tournament reserves. Any club that has asked to be removed is never considered.
- 1A full spread of yardages, from a wedge to a wood
- 2Different styles of hole, not eighteen of the same idea
- 3No two neighbouring holes play the same way
- 4The eighteen that fit together, not the eighteen that scored highest
Every featured hole gets the plaque by the tee, the film of the hole, and its place on the card.
The rules that keep it honest
- 1
Selection is never for sale. No club can pay to be nominated, shortlisted or featured, and no sponsor has any say in the course. Anything a club can buy affects how its pages look, never how its holes score.
- 2
One person, one vote, per club, confirmed by email. Head-to-heads are rate-limited and monitored for gaming.
- 3
Voting never requires a marketing opt-in. Your vote counts whether or not you tick the box, and the box is never pre-ticked.
- 4
The working is published. Weightings, the length bands, the pool, routing constraints and panel reasoning, every year.
- 5
Clubs stay in charge of their pages. Any club can claim its book, correct its details, or ask to be removed entirely, at any time.
Then you play it
When the course is revealed, the card opens. Play the featured holes over the season and fill it in. Complete it and you have gone round a course no one can play in a day.
Eighteen clubs. Eighteen holes. One course.
